Job Description:

This position is responsible to provide quality recreation therapy to behavioral health patients through a coordinated multi-disciplinary treatment program in coordination with the department managers. Performs recreation assessments, plans, implements, and effectively facilitates activities and groups. This position establishes, maintains, and monitors the program recreational therapy accounts and budget, expenditures, supplies and equipment providing optimal utilization of funds. Oversees and coordinates adjunct recreational therapies and funding, which are provided by community organizations.

Job Essentials

Supervises and/or coordinates with other department recreational therapists and providers of other adjunct recreational therapies from community resources. Oversees expenditures and funding and coordinates treatment.
Supervises students following clinic guidelines and in accordance with requirements established by student's university and DOPL to provide an appropriate learning experience.


Ensures that recreation therapists have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and holds them accountable for same. Optimizes productivity, promotes harmony and teamwork and provides constructive feedback to staff
Maintains safe, consistent supportive milieu by providing care in accordance with the multi-disciplinary treatment team, treatment plan and behavioral program interventions and programs to meet patient care needs.


Performs recreation assessments using knowledge of therapeutic recreation and pediatric physical, social and developmental principles to develop a baseline for planning care.


Communicates treatment recommendations based on recreation assessment to the treatment team and identifies treatment intervention strategies to facilitate treatment planning. Implements healthy lifestyles interventions.


Plans, implements and effectively facilitates activities and groups using organizational skills and knowledge of group dynamics to achieve treatment plan goals.


Establishes, maintains and monitors recreational therapy account and other related accounts (clothing, grants), budget, expenditures, supplies and equipment to provide optimal utilization of funds and ensure quality programming and consistency throughout the budgeted period.


Completes timely and accurate documentation on all patient care forms using knowledge of documentation standards for the department to facilitate communication with team members and compliance with standards.


Recognizes critical situations and identifies options to manage crisis using sound judgment and problem solving skills to prevent escalation of the situation or injury to client/staff.


Educates patients and families on therapeutic recreation and leisure education using knowledge of behavioral health treatment and recreation therapy to ensure patient/family receive all pertinent information to improve outcomes.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.
  • State licensure in Therapeutic Recreation.
  • 2 years of Therapeutic Recreation experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • National Certification in Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Psychiatric or Chemical dependency treatment experience.
